Book Review: Lord of the Vampires by Gena Showalter

Lord of the Vampires (Royal House of Shadows, #1) (Harlequin Nocturne, #119)Lord of the Vampires (Royal House of Shadows, #1) by Gena Showalter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Harlequin’s Royal House of Shadows series is a tale of two worlds, the modern world of 21st century humans and the alternate magical realm of Elden. The king and queen of Elden have fallen, murdered by the Blood Sorcerer who covets their thrones. To protect their children, Niccolai, Breena, Dayn and Micah, they each cast a spell, the queen for protection and the king for revenge. The spell also scatters the young royals to distant lands to keep them alive to fight another day. Gena Showalter’s Lord of the Vampires is the first book in the Royal House of Shadows series; it tells the story of crown prince of Elden, Niccolai, a vampire, a seducer and a sex slave in forced exile.

Niccolai the vampire calls to Jane in her dreams. She holds the key to his freedom. He is bound in servitude in a foreign land with no memory of his past. Only Jane can free him. She can help him regain his memory and discover the reason behind his imprisonment, and his driving need for revenge. Like all things his freedom comes with a cost--that cost may be Jane herself. Is he willing to pay for his freedom with her well being or possibly her life?

After a debilitating car accident Jane Parker, finds her emotional recovery lingering far longer than her physical one. She wakes, she reads, she runs and she dreams. Her vivid dreams fill her nights with the passion missing from her waking hours. When she dreams a dark and sensual lover, a vampire and seducer, awakens feelings that she thought best left untapped, but she can’t escape them or him. As her dreams continue, his disturbing presence begins to follow her into the daylight.

When Jane receives a package in the mail containing a bound book with an unfinished story and a final entry commanding her presence, she is more than a little skeptical. The story appears to be about the man from her dreams. The final entry also appears to be from him. She drifts off to sleep considering the possibilities, because she is a scientist and the paranormal her area of study. She knows that the creatures of folklore and vampires are real.

She awakens in an alternate reality and a crown princess in the realm of Delfina. She soon learns that she appears to others in this different reality to have the form of Niccolai’s captor, an evil and vindictive princess. She recovers quickly and demands to be taken to her nocturnal lover. She finds Niccolai as she dreamed him, bound, chained and tormented. Using their wits, they escape from the stronghold of the evil queen and her remaining daughter, but the prince is bespelled and they can only get, so far…

The release of Gena Showalter's, Lord of Vampires, kicks Harlequin’s Royal House of Shadows series in style. Fans of fairy tales and folk tales will find Showalter’s twist on Alice in Wonderland refreshing and sexy. The prince needs saving, the princess has the brains and villains fall when they join forces.
